Difference Between System > Remote Desktop and Remote Desktop Connection

1. System > Remote Desktop (Windows Settings)

  • Definition: This feature, found within Windows Settings, allows you to enable or disable remote connections to your device. When enabled, it allows other devices to connect to your computer remotely.
  • Use Case: This is typically used for allowing remote access to your local Windows computer. It’s essential for configuring your device to accept remote connections but does not initiate a remote session on its own.
  • Example:
  • If you want to allow someone to access your local computer from another device, you would go to Settings > System > Remote Desktop and turn on the remote access option.
  • This is useful for scenarios where a technical support team needs to access your machine to troubleshoot issues or if you want to connect to your office computer while working remotely.

2. Remote Desktop Connection (Application)

  • Definition: This is a standalone application in Windows that allows you to initiate a remote connection to another computer or server, such as a VPS, by entering the target device's IP address and credentials.
  • Use Case: You use the Remote Desktop Connection application to remotely connect to servers, Virtual Private Servers (VPS), or other machines that have remote access enabled.
  • Example:
  • Connecting to a VPS: If you have purchased a Windows VPS, you can use the Remote Desktop Connection app to access the VPS from your local device. You would open the app, enter the VPS IP address, provide the username and password for the VPS, and connect to control the remote VPS as if you were using it locally.
  • Steps: Open the Remote Desktop Connection application, enter the VPS IP, provide the login credentials, and then access the VPS desktop remotely.

Key Differences:

  • System > Remote Desktop is used to configure your local machine to accept remote connections, whereas the Remote Desktop Connection Application is used to connect to other devices remotely.
  • System > Remote Desktop is for allowing incoming connections to your local machine, while the Remote Desktop Connection Application is for initiating outgoing connections to a remote machine like a VPS.

Summary:

  • Use System > Remote Desktop when you want to allow remote access to your local computer.
  • Use the Remote Desktop Connection Application when you want to connect to a remote server, such as a VPS, by entering its IP address and login credentials.

This knowledgebase helps clarify which tool to use depending on whether you are configuring your machine for remote access or connecting to another machine, like a VPS, remotely.
